The history of the department began in the 60-70s of the 20th century and is connected with the scientific and methodological activities of the academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, professor V.L. Rvachev at the Berdyansk State Pedagogical Institute named after P.D. Osypenko. The implementation of the theory of geometric logic developed by him, which received important application in many branches of mathematics, required the use of computer technology. With the support of academician A.I. Berg, director of the state-owned plant "Azovkabel" O.V. Sukhorev, petitions to the Ministry of Education of Ukraine by the rector of the BSPI L.E. Leonovsky, dean of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics N.Ya. Fit and the scientific authority of academician V.L. Rvachev, the Minsk-1 electronic computing machine was purchased for the BSPI - the third in Ukraine. This became the basis for the creation of a computer laboratory of the teacher training institute, the permanent head of which was Associate Professor of the Department of Physics P.P. Fedorenko (he worked until 2014).
Computerization of production, management, scientific research and education, the need to train highly qualified specialists for the general education system were the reasons for the creation of the Department of Informatics in 1994, the first head of which was Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor O.V. Sosnitsky. In 1998-1999, the Department was headed by Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor V.I. Shavalova. In 1999, the Department was headed by Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor V.G. Khomenko.
In connection with the opening of the specialty "Professional Training": Computer Technologies in Management and Education, Computer Systems and Networks and Information Protection and Processing in 2001, the Department of Informatics was renamed the Department of Computer Technologies and Informatics Methods with the status of a graduate.
